The Hague Kunstmuseum
extensive art collections, especially Mondrian and De Stijl
The Kunstmuseum (Art Gallery) houses one of the country’s best art collections, and there are always at least three temporary exhibitions going on.
An entire wing is devoted to The Stijl (The Style), the Dutch contribution to international avant-garde. Founded in 1917, painter Theo van Doesburg gathered artists, architects, a poet, a composer, a mathematician and a furniture designers around him. They all shared the principles of a new, objective art, and an ideal of integrating art and architecture in daily life. This was meant to become the art and society of the future.
Painter Piet Mondrian and architect Gerrit Rietveld became the most famous members of this movement. The museum shows about everything connected, up to Mondrian’s last New York picture, Victory Boogie-Woogie.
